Juliet Jacques - 'Monaco'

Monaco is an experimental, auto-fiction novella composed in emails, exploring love, loss and loneliness in the sheltered state of Monaco.

"I went to Monaco last year and found it so strange that I just had to write about it. The surreality of it seemed better suited to fiction, drawing on my travels and exploring love, loss and loneliness in the wake of the twin disasters of GE2019 and COVID-19, and I liked the idea of illustrating it with my photographs, inspired by Andre Breton’s Nadja and my love of the proto-surrealist poet Guillaume Apollinaire, who grew up in Monte-Carlo. The result is a kind of travelogue, a photo album and a set of bitter-sweet love letters, to an unnamed recipient and to the British left.”
